Aslan Update

Ok - been over to Dad's and Aslan is at least eating. He wasn't eating what I left for him (chicken and rice) and he wouldn't eat what Dad gave him (Cesar) - but Dad bought one of those rotisserie chickens from the supermarket and I offered Aslan a bit which he sneered at but then i pushed it on his nose, and it seemed to kick his taste buds off, as he ate that bit and four or five more tiny pieces. Then he whined! So I gave him a small handful of shredded chicken which he scoffed and by the time I'd left he'd had THREE small meals of chicken - so I feel a lot more happy about it. He's still looking a bit sorry for himself, and his mouth obviously hurts him, but if he's eating then that's got to be half the battle. Phew.

As the pills are entirely impossible to give him as he is right now, I'm monitoring him, and if his physical state changes for the worse (he has bright eyes and wet nose) even a smidge it's off to the vet for an anti-biotic injection (which I don't understand why they didn't give him to start with.)

Thanks for listening to me burble about this, but I don't know what Dad will do without him, quite frankly, although I know he will have to in a year or so.

Off to watch silly Catwoman now.

try cod liver oil, i swear by it for when boston has an upset tummy
and he'll take your fingers off for it, just one of those 1 a day pills (I know dogs and pills....) but it might help, it's high fat and high calory and they look at it like a treat

also good for old dogs that are getting all jointy

He won't eat anything pill-like. We've tried him with cod-liver oil, as he had a ripped ligament a while back and is still a bit stiff after rest, but he absolutely won't touch them.

It was good to see him hoovering up the chicken. Dad will give him dog food (because he forgets) and Aslan is not keen (he never had it in his life before because Mum always cooked his food daily) - so I'll keep ringing dad and reminding him to go and get another rotisserie chicken today, if that's what will entice him to eat, he can have what he likes!

And no apologies required. Just sorry have not been around much. I am tending to spreadsheet when I'm online, which just winds me up into a tizzy. And not much I can do!

He's appallingly scruffy there- mother would have a fit. She kept him in show condition when she was alive, but we had him clipped a little shorter recently as it's easier for Dad to cope with.

Awww... what a sweetie. I'm so glad he remembered that Food is Good! Little dogs can live a long time--I knew one Yorkie that made it to 17. As to what you do... go to a shelter and find another little dog that was sent away when its owner died or had to go into a nursing home. Happens all the time, and it's heartbreaking.

But I hope the question doesn't come up for a long, long time.

I'm hoping he makes it to 17 - he's fit and healthy, always has been, apart from his teeth, and he's had nearly all of them out now (why they didn't take them ALL out I don't know, because I can't put him through another experience like this, he was so squashed after his operation) and although he's a picky eater he does eat enough to stay alive, at least. I keep speaking to Dad about getting another one straight away and he does agree, but he will be devastated afterwards, I know. What worries me more that he will do what happened after Mum died, and FORGET what happened, and keep looking for him. It's a worry.

What a cutie! Glad to hear that Aslan is doing okay. There's research showing older people do much better when they've got pets to care for, which just makes sense, really.
