Thoughts about fathers

Just noticed that Torquere have a father’s day sale.  Now, I know there are some gay fathers, but… otherwise.  I can just see my father’s face if I handed him a book on gay werewolf porn. *runs*

Somewhere else, last week, I saw someone getting sporked because erotica writers were dedicating books to their fathers.  Now, I don’t see anything wrong with this, actually.  My dad is hugely supportive—in so many ways—and I firmly plan to dedicate Mere Mortals to him. Yes, it’s a gay (Victorian gothic mystery) romance.  I know he won’t read it, because of the Alheimzer’s (if indeed it ever gets published, lets not jump the gun here, eh?  But he deserves the dedication. I don’t think dedications mean “hey dedicatee, READ THIS BOOK” – rather it’s a (hopefully) lasting testament to someone who means a lot, and someone who has helped.

I love to read dedications because sometimes they are deliciously vague. “To Mr Winthrope and he knows why” or “To a dark haired beauty” or whatever and I love to wonder who these people are and what part they took in the author’s life.

I found it rather sad that the restaurant, which we went to today and we couldn’t get a seat in for love and money on MOTHER’S DAY was notably empty of families celebrating their Dads.

I've dedicated to books to so many people -- my husband, my friends, to people who held my hand through the writing. I've dedicated one to a dear friend who died. I would happily dedicate one to my dad. He doesn't read my books (my mom does!) but he's wildly proud of me. My daughter is BEGGING me to dedicate a book to her, and I'll likely do that. I love her. She inspires me. She's NINE and hasn't read them (which I would hope would be obvious, but I've been accused of a lot of shit in my day; it wouldn't shock me to come under fire for letting my kids read gay erotica. Some people just live to slam others).

Heh - it was the same with me, my mum read my books, but Dad - although he would without the disease, simply can't remember what's he's read so he never gets beyond the first chapter, bless him. But yes, he's hugely proud. :D Dads rock.

Mother's Day has always been more of a restaurant-holiday, since traditionally it was Mom who did the cooking at home, so taking her out meant giving her a break from that. On Father's Day, Mom (or older kids or whoever can cook) can just shovel burgers or steaks or whatever at Dad and he'll be happy. And in fact, if you want to get seriously stereotypical about men [cough] Dad would be just as happy not to have to get dressed up to go to a restaurant. A huge steak he can eat in his stained, grubbing-around-the-house shorts and his comfortable old T-shirt with a hole under the arm would be the perfect holiday. ;D

I have no idea how many fathers actually conform to these notions, but that's where the thinking was for a very long time, at least over here, and the traditions seem to have stuck.

Well, it's depressing. Nothing my dad likes better than to get dressed up and going to a nice restaurant. Granted we do that every week anyway!!

My dad used to love the whole restuarant thing, but at the same time, I think he was torn about the amount the whole thing cost. I guess I understand, he lived through WW2 so it kind of came with the territory.

lol. My LJ is almost 5 years old!! So, that means K is 8 years old and the twins are 6 years old.

I can't believe it yet so glad I don't need strollers, baby carriers, diaper bags anymore. So nice.

I am also roasting a lamb shoulder with russet potatoes for dinner, something Matthew would rather have than lunch or dinner somewhere. :)

ARRRGH! I FORGOT Fathers' Day!!! I just tried to phone but they're out (quelle surprise). I'll send him an email, which he'll get at 3am since he's an insomniac silver surfer. Luckily I'm going up for his birthday in a couple of weeks.

My dad has copies of some of my books.
He keeps them on the shelf and shows them off, "My daughter wrote those." They aren't to his taste.

My husband is taking our oldest to bandcamp and having quality time with our youngest on the way home.

we'll probably go out. No AC still and he'll want red meat. Too hot to cook.

My dad would never read my stuff but he'd be proud I was published. Though if he weren't already beyond being startled he'd probably drop dead of horror if I ever dedicated a book to him.

But sporking people for that--!? A father gives a girl confidence... or he doesn't; my dad and I were always at odds until I was old enough to realize that for a man with PTSD he did a damned fine job.

I dedicated Eye to a friend who passed away two days after sending me a note about Gent's Gent; I dedicated TW, in part, to that little pooch in the icon, who checked out while I was finishing the story. So to hell with people who piss on other folks' dedications.

Around here, a big Father's Day thing is to get Dad a new barbecue grille and let him play with it for dinner. (Canadians are obsessed with cooking outdoors, probably because summer is so short. We have neighbors out there in February, on the back porch, in parkas, with the grill going.)

Happy day to you and your dad, and I'm glad you've still got him!

Thanks hun, I know I probably don't have too long--although he IS amazingly fit and healthy, drives, perfect vision, all own teeth, never had a day's illness in his life except for a hernia, low blood pressure, so god willing he could go on for a good while yet! I plan to make the most of him!

My dad is supposedly reading my novel as we speak. When he told me he'd bought it and planned to read it, I told him the sex scenes were easy to spot and he could just skip over those. He said No, he intends to read it all...

I'm going to very interested to see if he makes it *g*

*laughs* My mother used to read mine as I wrote it but I had to leave out the sex scenes and printed them in "white ink" - she once said to me "there's ten blank pages"

I said "yes, you didn't want to read the sex scenes."
