Watched Far from Heaven last night - and I really enjoyed it, although I thought the ending was weak (although on retrospect I suppose it was the only ending that could have been, I was just pissed off at her smiling acceptance, but I suppose it was her "getting strong" (although she must have been pretty strong all the way through.)

1950's Connecticut. Dennis Quaid (I love him and he's so underrated) have a "seemingly" perfect marriage, but he's a repressed homosexual. He keeps saying he's working late and one evening she takes him a supper and finds him kissing a boy in his office. Then the wife - who's all upset and lonely, gets chatting to the black gardener. Nothing happens other than friendship but it destroys his life. it was ironic that what SHE didn't do had more affect than what he was actually doing.

The performances were amazing. Personally I would have liked it to be perhaps a bit longer, but it worked well. The fact that the husband has no vocabularly to deal with what is happening to him. He calls it a "problem".

But I loved it, omg it was brilliant. The costumes were divine. The '50's (actually the 30's to the 50's) is my favourite decade and the fashions were gorgeous. The costumer in this deserved an Oscar, although I doubt if he/she got one.

It was very powerful. There was no explicit anything, but that made it more erotic, really. I will have to buy the DVD and add to slashy shelf (which is growing nicely, thank you)

But OMG I really really REALLY wish I hadn't watched it. It is all a bit too close to "Junction X" I'd like to say for the record that I hadn't heard of this film and plot until AFTER I thought of Junction X, and I plan JX to be very English and of course the ending is completely different.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gehayi for this. Not all Superheroes are .... straight?

It was Sandy Powell did the costumes for Far From Heaven and if she didn't win an Oscar for those she certainly has for Orlando and Shakespeare in Love so you needn't worry for her, she's brilliant, she's the best costume designer working in Hollywood today and possibly the best ever since Edith HEAD.

Did you know that Julianne Moore was at least five months PREGNANT when that film was shot? And Sandy Powell managed to conceal it. Since I knew (and since I knew the period) I could see how she managed it -- cheated the waistlines higher on her, to just barely below the bust, and let the bouffant skirts hide the bulge, and never used pencil skirts on her.

What made me saddest about the story was thinking that Cabana Boy was going to leave Dennis Quaid before long and THEN where would he be?

It was not a cheerful movie, although it was a good one.

it's funny, that I was thinking of Head as i was watching the film.

And I did wonder why she was constantly wearing the big skirts when most younger and fashionable women were already going to thinner frocks, the two wouldn't have mixed, I'm sure, they were very slavish to styles back then.

But I loved them. Loved that the colours were all muted Autumn colours (even the gardeners jacket) to match the beautiful CT autumn colours.

And yes, I was so worried about Dennis and the Cabana Boy!
