HA! Just as I was scrolling down to your post, iTunes started on See The Conquering Hero... :D
Your queen being older than ours, do you also get a lot of nonsense about her retiring and abdicating in favour of Charles? We've had a lot of that recently when ours turned 70, a lot of people apperently think Margrethe should do that. I'm a bit O.o about that myself. That's just not how a monarchy works. And why should she? She's smart, modern and has all her faculties intact. Thankfully she also understand tradition and will do no such thing, at least not while she's still completely healthy in spite of all the cigarettes.
Yes - TONS of it. And it's just not a precedent. Monarchs don't abdicate just because they are living a long time. Victoria didn't and her son only ruled for 8 years, Elizabeth could have done and named a successor and didn't. the only monarch who has EVER voluntarily abdicated was Edward VIII (for "love")
So exactly - why the hell should she? I'm quite sure that Charles doesn't expect her to, either. That's the way it goes. If he inherits her constitution, he'll have a good 20 years on the throne, anyway. I wouldn't want William taking over too early, either.
Thank Ceiling Cat it's not just us!!!! I totally don't understand the thought behind it. Being monarch may mean they have a far more priviledged life than the rest of us, but retirement is one priviledge they don't get. That's the whole point! It's not a 9-5 job. O.o
There was a smaller crisis a few years ago, where Prince Henrik was being somewhat depressed to the point of considering relocating to their french castle permanently. Eventually he decided not to, obviously, but if he had done that then Margrethe might have abdicated and gone with him, but that would have been a completely different situation.
They're healthy. They're smart. They know what they're doing. They're getting old yes, but they're not dead yet.
