The new Robin Hood is DIRE. Dire dire dire dire dire.  I was expecting it to be pretty naff,  but it is truly dreadful.  They've spent about six quid on the sets and two quid on the costumes.

Robin looks like some bloke you see picking rubbish off the side of the road, wearing an orange waistcoat and is the least hot Robin bar none.  This includes Costner.

The script?  OMG the script.  so very very very bad.   And Marion was in full thick make-up.

Gisborne is rather gorgeous though, he sounds like Sean Bean and is dark and brooding.  But not worth watching any more of it, thank you very much.  I'm just pleased I don't know enough about the period to hate the inconsistencies I'm sure are there.

The Michael Praed version was a billion times better.  Hell, Richard Greene's version was better.  even Costner was better!!

Shame on you BBC. After Rome and Dr Who I expected something special.  This Robin Hoodie is just AWFUL.

Then there was several hours of ballet. Will Kemp! *squee*  I bet [livejournal.com profile] dubaiyan is watching it.

In half an hour First KnightETA: A Knight's Tale is on. I've never seen it before, so am looking forward to that.

I wouldn't say RH was 'dire', precisely. Just ... not as good as Robin of Sherwood. Costumes, OK. Archery, technique OK (though far too accurate - I wouldn't trust one of our top club archers to shoot arrows between my fingers even with a recurve, let alone a longbow!). Scenery, OK. Peasants, far too clean. Why is Much doing impressions of Hagrid? ("I shouldn'a said tha'...") I really, really can't see the Sheriff saying "Yippee", honestly. Marian was ... buxom. And oh, yes: the make-up. Full Polyfilla. And the whooshy arrow sounds to accompany on-screen captions? So not needed! Still, as you say, Guy of Gisburne was acceptable, and there was possibly some vestige of the beginnings of a plot struggling to emerge, so I'll continue to watch and tape. But it's been done better.

*blows kisses to picture of Nasir on the wall*

First Knight Did you mean A Knight's Tale? I've got that on DVD. A triple set with Mark of Zorro and Princess Bride.

First Knight is a fairly hideous take on the Matter of Britain starring Richard Gere as Lancelot and Sean Connery as an aging Arthur. Connery is decent, but Gere is just awful, I think.

Sorry - it's the name given to the collective body of legends and stories about King Arthur. I try not to use jargon as a general rule, but knew [livejournal.com profile] aunty_marion was familiar with the term because we talked about it when I was writing my submission to that Arthurian anthology.

I'm quite sure they'll be repeating RH ad nauseum and Gisborne is to die for.

Young Will was on a programme called Ballet Hell on More 4 which was one of these "grump old men" type programmes where dancers talk about the training etc. Was intersting. Will smashed any slashy thoughts I had about him, because he said that he loved Ballet lessons coz there were loads of girls in the classes.

My favourite is the 1975 BBC mini-series "The Legend of Robin Hood", with Paul Darrow as the Sheriff and David Dixon as Prince John, and a very, very slashy bath scene.

[rummage] And it's finally out on DVD. :-) Must put it on my list for the next order form amazon.co.uk.

Coo. I don't think I'd ever heard of that one, even! Though, sad to say, I only recognise a couple of names in the cast. Paul Darrow, of course, and John Abineri who of course played Herne the Hunter in RoS later on! Yes, I must look out for that.

Here's the amazon.co.uk url for the DVD:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Legend-Robin-Hood-Martin-Potter/dp/B000HA46O4/sr=8-1/qid=1160257535/ref=pd_ka_1/026-3668643-2662851?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

Currently fifteen quid on amazon. Absolutely brilliant, and even carries the Mary Whitehouse seal of disapproval. But beware if you don't like unhappy endings, because it really is the legend, not the Disneyfied version.

Ah, but so does Robin and Marian, which I absolutely adore. Down with Disney! And RoS got half-way there with Marian going into the nunnery, at least. I don't do Amazon, so I'll have to start browsing HMV and Virgin, and must remember to put it on the list of 'DVDs wanted' that I keep on my PDA.

I currently live in California, so if I want any BBC/ITV stuff that hasn't been released on Region 1 DVD, I have to use mail order. Amazon is, alas, the least annoying of the ones who will ship to the US when it comes to boxed sets.

*happy dance* OK, it cost me £19.99 at HMV, but I now have The Legend of Robin Hood - another one goes onto the pile of "must-watch" DVDs!

I recall enjoying the version of Robin Hood-for-TV with Patrick Bergin and Uma Therman, as it was a bit gritty and grotty. But I believe it got buried by attention given to the Costner film, as both debuted around the same time.

Regarding production values and the latest seasons of Dr. Who (which I have not seen), I always assume Who budgets are low when the plots seem to be mired on the third rock from the sun.

God no. The budgets for the new Dr Who's are HUGE - no expense spared and no "filming in a quarry" EVER. All CGI enhanced and incredible sets.

Well worth watching. Amazing stuff.
