I.e. The steampunk clothes that most suit my personality, I have to say that I spent a lot of my childhood actually wearing a pair of green goggles and a pith helmet. My favourite uncle, Max, was a traveller and a diplomat and I adored him. He brought me great things back from all over the world, and my pith helmet was something I literally lived in for years. (Before this I had a cowboy outfit, complete with silver six shooters that had actual chambers and plastic bullets that slotted into my ammunition belt – my mother told me that I had to be wrestled out of it, and she would often come into check on me in the night to find me wearing my ammunition belt over my pyjamas.) I went through phases like this – I loved my pith helmet just as much, and a while later, I was given the most gorgeous black cloak and tricorn hat and would spend hours galloping a black home-made sock-head hobby horse (named Bess, naturally) around the garden, stopping any intruders and demanding their money or their lives. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was in adult life to find that Black Bess never existed. Another clothes obsession was a green celluloid “dealer’s eyeshade” which I wore until it disintegrated. This all may explain a lot about me.
Anyway, what I meant to say was that the delightful, and clarity-laden Charlie Cochrane is doing a wonderful series of “Writing Historical Fiction” on her blog which deserves tons of attention. Today she talks about setting the scene, not thumping the reader over the head with this such as “As Bob walked down the road, he couldn’t avoid the excitement caused by the “Neil Armstrong walks on the moon” headlines” Read it here and catch up with the whole series on her blog HERE.

Oh, man, that brings back memories. I had a cowboy hat and boots and a belt with a holster and a gun--no plastic bullets, though. I practically lived in that outfit when I was little.
And I would have killed for a cloak like that. I drool with envy even now. I also love Pirate Cid's outfit even though I know that sash would catch on everything I passed.
