Sorry that I didn’t manage to do any blogging AT the event. I went by train, so taking books, freebies (that no-one took!) and quizzes and posters and god knows what was enough and I couldn’t manage the laptop as well.  Just as well really because Aunty Marion brought hers and she couldn’t get connected.

ANYWAY!! It was a START – and a good start I think. We had the following people there.

[livejournal.com profile] tiggothy, [livejournal.com profile] clarelondon, [livejournal.com profile] junkfoodmonkey, [livejournal.com profile] stevie_carroll[livejournal.com profile] annebrooke, [livejournal.com profile] aunty_marion, [livejournal.com profile] c_smith_author[livejournal.com profile] erastes[livejournal.com profile] jl_merrow, [livejournal.com profile] josephine_myles[livejournal.com profile] lesley_w[livejournal.com profile] alex_beecroft

I've missed someone out, I KNOW I have.

It was very informal, but all the better for that, to start with, I think. We set up the food (lashings of it, and hardly got touched) and the book table and then we set the tables in a square, introduced ourselves and what we were doing, and it was fascinating to see the range of people and the skills just in that small group of writers and readers. We discusses our publishers, and talked about tax and the ITIN - and some of the newer authors threw out some questions which others could answer.  Four hours was just right, I think, then most of them went off for pizza and I had to come home, as there weren't any other trains. Boo.

So - PLEASE NOTE - we are planning to do this regularly. We are planning to do another one in JULY 2011 so make a note on your diaries. Probably READING, because that's hopefully more central for many (yes, yes, I know, not central for all) and in a place where there's accomodation for people who have to come further.  Open to all people who have an interest in gay fiction, be it writing, editing, reading, reviewing - whatever. You don't have to be a writer, at ALL. More details as we have it - [livejournal.com profile] stevie_carroll[livejournal.com profile] c_smith_author are taking the reins on this, which I'm glad about, I'm not the kind of person who is good at conference organisation I have discovered.

It was fun, and ladies it was marvellous to see you all. Thank you so much for coming, and I look forward to the next one. We need tee-shirts. :D

I'm so glad it went well and everybody enjoyed themselves. I'm also happy to hear it will be a regular event. For the one in July, I will send along a couple of copies of each of Cheyenne's historical books so they can be on display, (and perhaps someone might even want to buy one?)

Mark

It was great! You got a lot of mentions, what with Anne Brooke joining the stable (I must have missed this, A Dangerous Man is one of my MOST FAVOURITE BOOKS EVER and what made me cling to her coattails in the first place)

Thank you for this - I'm hoping that many publishers might take it up (and not just historicals too, there were authors from all genres) if we can get the word around enough - and with Paypal the transfers are easy enough to manage!

The only name I see missing is Charlie, but I have a cold and may be blurry.

Publishers and taxes... yes, the glamourous world of writing m/m romance...

Charlie couldn't make it - poor dear - her boiler blew up, there were a few who cancelled at the last minute due to illness or car breakages - and distance - coming from the valleys in Wales takes dedication.

Heh yes - so true!

I would have sent books for this one, but as I've just published 5 books in a row, I was all expensed out! However, by next summer Cheyenne should be well able to afford sending books over.

we did, and please think about coming next time, personal reasons--bah, just put 'em aside. I think it's important to start making our own club, because I'm sick of being excluded from all these other clubs.

I'm so glad you had a great time. And I feel rotten for not coming to cheer you on. July next year for definite though.

I just realized that because I was doing the washing up, I didn't manage to get to the book table to see what was on offer there :( Blast!

OTOH, at least it seemed to go OK. It was lovely meeting everyone, and during the pizza bit it was suggested that we might possibly have a Christmas social in London. Also [livejournal.com profile] aunty_marion took the only photos of the event on her mobile, so I'm waiting eagerly to see her post :)

I didn't get any books either, due to being stupid and leaving money in the car.

Realised as we were walking in through the doors of the library that I left the box of Paned Gymreig in there as well, so sorry 'bout that. Will have to give it you next time.

Tomorrow, with luck, I'll have recovered enough oomph to connect the mobile up to the computer and sort pics out. I'll probably upload them to LJ's Scrapbook rather than flickr (which would confuse all my other friends!), and will also (for similar reasons) post to the ely_meet comm rather than my own LJ...

We had "Hidden Conflict" on the table this time. I'm pretty certain I sold at least one copy of that.

I'm so glad this was a success, and I'm sure it will be the start of something big! Reading is more of a possibility for me, though getting away anywhere is a considerable challenge. I hope you and Alex are feeling less bruised now, and that it has helped to restore your faith in your writing.

We do need t-shirts, don't we? Actually, I remember seeing a couple by the table, but was so distracted by all the books I forgot to investigate!

It was lovely to meet you, and to have the benefit of more experienced published authors their to answer our questions. And it wasn't all publishers, tax and ITINs. I seem to remember interesting discussions about issues surrounding women writing gay male characters (that old chestnut), American spelling/grammar, promotional chats online, and, er... how to pronounce Torquere!

I'm really looking forward to next year :D

i think Essayel was from Abergavenny - which is about three hours just from you, which would have been a hellish journey--her car died.

I'm glad you got home safely! :D did the sheep miss you?

It was great to meet you in real life - and I'm sorry I missed saying goodbye for the day. Mind you, I was still trying to find my way to Pizza Express...
*geographically challenged*

I'm happy to do some t-shirts for next time, I have a local chap who makes them relatively cheaply and in small run numbers. I'll let the organisers know if they need me :).

I learned a lot and especially enjoyed chatting to fellow fans! :)

LOL - yes, and we were worried that there'd be a deathly silence.

I brought LOADS of freebies, hats and teeshirts, and no-one took any! I should have put a sign on them saying "free" i suppose...

No probs! I didnt really say goodbye to anyone - I suppose its because I reckon I "see" you all every day.

Tee shirts would be a great idea!

I'd definitely have taken some if I'd known they were free!

Next time, I suggest we have a "freebies" table, so there's no confusion :)

Yeah, Abergavenny is in the same county as me, but probably about 3 hours away (took us about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to get to the Royal Welsh, near Builth). Hope she makes it next time!

...and I don't have any sheep (yet - gimme a few years. Am getting chickens next year).

I'm sorry I missed it, but as I spent most of the weekend passed out surrounded by collies (who never turn down the opportunity to have a nap) I wouldn't have been much company. :-(

Reading sounds like a lovely idea. As soon as you've got a date I'll put it in my diary. I'm glad it all went well; it sounds as if you all had a lovely time.

Merry =^..^=

I got a lurgy, so it was just as well you didn't come! but it was worth doing, and I'm sure it will get more popular if we stick to it. Just no-one expect me to do organising, that kind of thing scares me senseless.

It sounds wonderful! (And sorry for missing this post - I only just found it now, otherwise I would've replied much sooner.)

I'm definitely going to try to come to the 2011 meet-up. Hopefully by then I'll have had something published, even if only a small thing. Getting to share a little personal success with fellow writers who've been through it before would be brilliant, and it'll give me more incentive to keep sending those stories out to magazines. :D
