I don't get Furry stories. I mean. I just don't get it. Could someone explain the appeal? I mean I know Disney, and Robin Hood and such, I suppose I never really thought about it from an erotic point of view. *shudder * How does a fox KISS? I don't even want to think about the other implications.

I've had some explanations given me which suggest the furries who take it seriously enough to dress up regard those characters as alternate personas, just as much as costume folks who do fancy ballroom garb or POTC or something.
This is also tied into BDSM scenes like puppy or pony play, which is more about anxiety relief by taking yourself out of your usual constraints and fears in a safe space. It's one of the different kinds of subbie head space that can get very trippy. This can be pretty intense psychologically, not something I'd take lightly if somebody told me they were into it. They're not likely to tell you casually, either. It's a little hard to tell when a piece of writing or artwork is coded for that, or just into the more general furry-people-are-fun style.
Science fiction likes aliens. The conventions for twenty years now have been full of furry erotica and porny artwork, usually het guy artists drawing boob-heavy girls, and they *clearly* find it hawt. Two girls together is also a popular option, just as in anime and manga. It really doesn't matter if I find it absurd in the same way as old-fashioned porn mags, which often seem grotesque to me. Cue owl head tilt + me saying, "Whut? But that doesn't even work--" but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?
There's also the minority representation with muscle-bound furry guys getting hot and bothered about each other instead.
All of the furry writers like to bring in animal behavior traits (wolves always like to dominate, here we go again) and there's a good dose of BDSM porn in all of it, not just the gay stuff.
If you think about skin vs. fur textures, sensuality, and uses for extra body parts (gee, wonder why prehensile tails are always so popular!) along with the sort of interest some folks give to tentacle porn, you'll get that part of it.
I find it odd that I know folks who want to show me the stuff that explains it a little better.

Date: 2010-09-12 08:19 pm (UTC)While I write these characters, I see them in my head as humanoid with just animal characteristics. I don't read furry stories with characters who are more animal than humanoid because it just... squicks me. I don't get how muzzles and cold noses and barbed penises can be appealing, though I know it's a kink and I'm all for people having kinks. ^_^

Date: 2010-09-12 11:09 pm (UTC)Yes, I'm writing anthro. Always liked it. Started with Robin Hood, came up with Warthaven (a monthly strip long defunct) and the movie Rock and Rule, then graduated to Omaha.
You write, or draw them so the muzzles aren't really an impediment. I've got a bear and a leopard in mine.

Date: 2010-09-13 08:52 am (UTC)Wolf/wolf and wolf/human sex = hawt, but half-wolf/human sex squicks me.
=/= dog ears + dog tail, which I find as cute as cat ears + cat tail.
