Film Night. The Devil Wears Prada.

ICK. ick ick ick Not recommended. It was just about everything I dislike in a film, an obvious "cinderella" type of thing with a "frumpy" woman who turns into a beauty. When DER. Anyone who can make Ann Hathaway anything but gamine and beautiful would be a genius. Geeky clothes and scruffy hair do not make a woman frumpy.

I would have been happier if a fat and truly frumpy woman had had the part, someone like Cathy Bates, and then made good, no matter what she looked like. All Hathaway had to do was have a hair cut and borrow some fabulous clothes and suddenly she was taken more seriously. So many wrong messages, even when they were attempting to say the opposite, they failed.

And I was expecting more a bitter diatribe on the fashion industry, and I didn't get it. In fact, apart from the fact that the receptionists were dieting (wow - that was a big revelation) to drop a size, that was about it. In fact - Glenn Close ET: coz I'm an idiot: Meryl Streep gave a very intelligent and interesting speech about the colour cerulean referring to Hathaways frumpy jumper that actually made me like Streep's character from the start. She was an Empress and frankly deserved the attention she knew she deserved. She gave a powerful, understated performance.

However, the Harry Potter stuff was stoopid.

The relationship stuff was hurried and "unimportant". First her boyfriend was pleased for her then he turned petulant and grumpy and we weren't really shown the breakdown of the relationship. We were told she was working nights and weekends, but we weren't shown it in the context of the home, her being too tired for sex, or conversation and when she didn't turn up for his birthday, he just came over as being unreasonable.

As for the ending part, that she called him up and he just said "oh well, we can make it work, perhaps" - he moves to Boston and she promptly takes up a job in New York. *headdesk*

The thing is, that once again, it couldn't exactly work out what it wanted to be, it tried to be too many things and failed in becoming anything at all. The clothes were purty though.

It's Meryl Streep, not Glenn Close. And she was *awesome*.

Bah. I've been DYING to see this film and that's the first bad review I've read, except I'm buggered now because I usually agree with you on these things. I read the book. It was a light hearted read and the plot was a little thin but I did enjoy it over all. I was so looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep being all hard ass too, I love that character. *sigh*

I might be seeing The Queen on Saturday instead though. That had better be good. *grump*

BTW, sorry if I sent you an email from a stupid address this morning, we still haven't got things up and running properly.

Nah. Go and see it. Pretty clothes. Very thin women and Streep (not Close (beats head on desk)) is very good.

It just.. was... meh.

I got your email! I replied to Alkazar though, sorry!

Good! I decided not to go and see it, worried it might be like this and so I'm truly grateful that you suffered for us in order to bring us this review!!

Have you seen The Queen?? Any good??

No, haven't seen the queen - not something that interests me, although I understand she does a great job.

Got your email - am very happy!

Probably most people who went to see it were into clothes. I'm just not. I'd've liked some plot too, and perhaps a decent message.
