I’m sorry, but it’s things like this that make me revert, just temporarily into a squealing fangirl who wants to throw themselves at Isaac’s feet. The man understands Lucius, inside out—makes far far more of him than JKR, who frankly, until Isaacs started playing the part had hardly even treated him as anything 3 dimensional. What he says here about “what happened to Lucius in Azkaban” made me happy (in a fanfic way, not happy about the rape and torture) and the way he talks about his emasculation by Voldemort (or rather the completion of that process, begun by the Ministry) is just class. And LOOK at him, he’s all worn, and sad and…gah!  WANT!

*coughs* normal professional author service will be resumed as soon as possible.

As long as Jason doesn’t do any more of this.

That's the thing, isn't it? He makes him fully-fleshed, real, palpable, menacing, and moving, where JKR used him like a mere cartoon villain, as the parody of a baddy.

absolutely - and he thinks about Lucius' backstory, which is more than JKR ever did.

OMG, I'm positively drooling right now. Lucius=love. Jason=love. Jason as Lucius? WORSHIP!

I just wish they would also include the scene with young Lucius who greets little Snape on his first day at Hogwarts...

Oh GOD yes, me too. That one moment made the whole series worthwhile for me! :D

They did cast a boy to play young Lucius for HBP (but then scrapped his scenes), so maybe they will include him in Snape's memories? I hope!

=O!

I just might get around to finishing DH now. Was it in the first half or the second half of the book?

I don't know if it's worth reading the whole abomination, though. Just read that chapter.

Skimming the book (just reading the dialogue and skipping all the Harry angst OHMYGODTISALLMYFAULT) just makes it bearable.

I was surprised at how evil and manipulative Dumbledore is written in that chapter. I wonder if it was intentional on JKR's part...

I really don't think so - but when we did the sporking of the last few books, it became really really obvious. He's quite awful, and was right from back when Sirius decided not to be secret keeper. He uses people quite abominably. *loathes the man*

I thought this interview was brilliant, too. I LOVE him! He really does get Lucius and has always conveyed that well on film. I simultaneously can't wait for the film, and dread it all being closer to finished.

It's galling - I loathed the book, but I have to say that the film LOOKS REALLY GOOD. I'm torn...

I'm with you, 100% on this one. WOW.

I remember that bit being one of the things I wanted to see beyond the pages. I remember feeling sad for Lucius in the book, seeing how he was broken stage by stage on the periphery of things from HP's perspective... In spite of the fact that I don't think this was the author's intent. Lol.

I was always much more interested in the story beyond that kid's periphery.

*sigh*

Absolutely - it was Lucius' characterisation that made me fascinated with the character, because in the books prior to him doing the part he was nothing and no-one. I became obsessed with his back story - his abusive father, which I believe became canon at some point - his friendship with Snape, which I had from Snape's first year - and was thriled that this actually happened in the last book. No monster is born a monster - Lucius became that way for reasons, I really enjoyed exploring him. sigh. i miss him.

GENIUS. This is a man who really gets inside a character's psyche, thinks about their life, what goes on 'off camera'.

This isn't just your run-of-the-mill acting, it's the world's finest cosplaying, by someone who's brought a fan's focus on reading between the lines and seeing behind the scenes.

Lucius peers over his sunglasses and looks over at Snape who is huddling under a huge beach umbrella and is covered from head to foot.

"You've done nothing but complain since we got to South America, Severus. And you said no one would believe that you'd allow yourself to be poisoned. Have another cuba libre and strip off a little."

Severus snorts knowingly. "You just want an excuse to slather me all over in sunscreen potion. For your information, sunglasses don't help against Legilimency," he smirks, summoning a frosty glass and lifting it in toast before taking a long sip.

"The potion I wouldn't mind," he admits judiciously, "and to be honest the slathering would be rather delightful, but not here. The bloody sand gets everywhere!"

With a wide, satisfied smile--less like a cat who has got the cream, and more like a panther who has found that the cream can be eternal - he puts down his drink. He loves that Severus can read his intentions...now.

"Oh, that sound terribly uncomfortable. I would not be your friend if I allowed this to continue. Perhaps I can assist you to remove it. Or at least," he said, happier than he felt he had a right to be, "help you locate it."

*squee* Thank you :-)

(and how come I'm the only one so far to mention the way he's handling his cane?
...oh, ok, it's the same as me being the only one at work who giggles everytime the song with the line "Santa got stuck up my chimney when he came last year" comes round on the Christmas CD...)

I totally agree. Jason Isaacs makes the perfect Lucius. He and Sirius have always been my favourite characters - I did write a few Sirius/Lucius fanfics *blush*). I also loved Jason in The Patriot. He's so wonderfully british!

Thank you. I liked seeing his insight into the character.

This is me drooling. Lots.

I do love how much he actually thinks about the character he's playing -- it's such a fascinating contrast to the books, where Lucius really is nothing more than a plot device, but that obviously doesn't work at all if you're playing the part (Ophelia is also a plot device for most of Hamlet, but you can't argue that actresses don't put a lot of work into playing her). And now I sort of want to write fic...dammit. ;)

Exactly - bringing Method to Potter. Who'd've thunk.

I am having to sit on my hands too and stop thinking about what happened to him next. I was so disgusted with book seven I ran screaming from fanfic.

he curious thing is that, while he seems low-key, sad, crushed even, he also *still* gives the impression of power. He could still do something as energetic and demanding as Sharkespeare, while looking like *that*.
Tell ya, as with various other actors, it *really* makes ya wanna write parts that deserve his attention.

I adore that he does interviews in costume - even in character. Rickman refuses to do that, he says it cheapens "the art." I'd love to see him in some Shakespeare

Same here!!!
After the last (dreadful) HP movie and the disappointment of the last book I vowed to *not* go and see these last two HP movies.

And then this clip showed up.
I'm going. Oh, definitely going!
