I know- I KNOW this, but I can't refind the evidence.  Once upon a time final exams at school were called Matriculation – then they became O levels and then GCSEs – I remember my mother saying that she had to pass all of her exams at matriculation or you didn't "pass out" of grammar school.  Now the term is more widely used for passing IN to a university or college – but it wasn't always. They still call it end of high school exams "matriculation" for example – has anyone seen any sites where I can back up my point to the editor?
