Dad's had to give up his driving licence so this week has been very very stressy. He can't remember about the licence and one minute he's understanding and the next minute he's angry. I've had to tell him a story and say that it's "because he's 82 and all drivers stop at 82" which seems to be working. (and realistic, after all there's a set age to start, there should be a set age to stop.) The real story is far too long to explain to him and he wouldn't be able to process the concepts behind it.  I've taken his car keys away and I'll just have to field every call he makes when he says "I can't find my car keys." It will probably take a few weeks before he gets the hang of it—and I need to sell the car in the interim. That will help in the long run but of course we'll then have to deal with "where's the car?"

Writing therefore is just about impossible. Can't get Dad to keep quiet for more than five minutes—not that I want to shut him up, but the constant repetition of conversations takes so much time. If you haven't had the same conversation six times in a day, then I don't recommend you try it.

I've been trying to finish a 3k short story all week. all I need to do is the sex. "all" – she says… I just read Ava March's "Bound Forever" and the sex is so accomplished, I can hardly write sex at all these days. I shall get that finished tomorrow and will push on with the new WIP – still tentatively called Gentleman of Fortune and I don't want it to be called that, to be honest. I shall perhaps have to have a naming competition or summat.

How many days to Westeros? Hodor?

My late grandmother was fond of a Bible verse that I can never find. "When I was a child, they picked me up and carried me where I wanted to go. Now I am old and they carry me where I do not wish to go."

Toddlers and impaired elders have a lot in common.

I know where you're coming from with the repeated conversations thing. When I visit mother, she's the same - we have the same three conversations the whole time I'm there. And there's no point getting irritated with her, because she just doesn't know she's doing it.

You have my sympathies regarding the whole loss of driving license situation. We've been through exactly the same thing with my own mother this year. Loosing her independence to drive has been a real blow to her.

It sounds horribly frustrating. I hope the weekend is an improvement.

I can't seem to do sex scenes any more either (not that I ever really could.) I'm thinking perhaps it's a sign to tell me to stop doing sex scenes.

*sigh* It's so familiar, I had the same when we had to stop Mum driving. She swung between understanding and being happy to be taken around, to great resentment. Sadly, in many ways, she soon grew accustomed to the car being gone.

I've known octogenerians who were still racing vintage cars (and Dad celebrated his 70th by competing at Shelsley Walsh -- though not in a vintage car), so I'm not convinced about a maximum age for driving. Stricter controls on who can drive generally I can see working, along with better (and affordable) public transport for those it prevents from being car users.

yes, but i had to tell him something simple. What I can't believe is that there are no restraints on anyone driving--your licence runs until you are 70 ish I think, then it's reneewed every 3 years, but there are no eye tests, nothing. considering most people's eyesight gets worse as they get older it seems unbelievable.

i think it will be easier - perhaps - when the car has gone - and I need to put some posters up like I did when his little dog died last year.

Thank you!

and yes, I just want to tell the story, rather than the sex, and that's awkward because it's for an erotica anthol!

More tests I can definitely go with, but I'd bring that in earlier than 70 as well.

Oh dear! Yes, that is a bit of a drawback :) Oh well, just sit up and think of England, I guess.

you can write the sex. I know you can write it, because I know you've done it before, from back in the days when you had that OTHER name. :)

Of course, [livejournal.com profile] eternaleponine just got a story accepted at Circlet for a Magic U anthology and of course it was erotica and of COURSE she had a nearly impossible time writing it because her protagonist was SHY and kept insisting that she didn't need to write that part, she could fade to black on him now, really! She had to convince him that, no, writing that part was sort of the POINT.

if you haven't had the same conversation six times in a day,

I know exactly what you mean. *hugs you and Dad*
