anyone who has heard me speak will say this quiz is a blithering liar.
What American accent do you have?

New York City. You are most definitely from New York City. Not New Jersey, not Connecticut. If you are from Jersey then you can probably get into New York City in 10 minutes or less.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

Snicker. While I've only heard a bit of your speech (one of the voice posts), I can't imagine it being mistaken for New York City EVER.

The test's definitely American-centric, as I did get more-or-less the correct region when I took it (I'm in the Great Lakes region).

I suppose it is pointless me taking it--but I thought I might get Posh Philly or something.

Apparently I'm a New Yorker too, despite my accent normally varying between Uttlesford plum and arse-end-of-Essex.

I took it and got southern even though I'm from upstate New York. It did say, though, that the result might be due to being a little too precise or uptight with my responses.

A fun quiz
Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

If you are not from the North, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Southerner who hates Southern accents and tries really hard to "talk right"; or
(b) A New Yorker or New Jerseyan who doesn't have the full accent

Well, I am an Upstate New Yorker, even though I try very hard to Aussie ;o)

Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.

And if you're not from the West, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Pittsburgher - the quiz can't tell the difference;
(b) Someone from Canada (probably southern Ontario) who doesn't have a Canadian accent;
(c) Someone from northern New England who doesn't have a New England accent; or
(d) Someone from Texas or the Heartland who was born after 1980.
You are definitely not from New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, the Deep South, etc.</font>

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?
Same
Same, no wait I mean different, maybe, a little bit different...
Different

Pittsburgh! Got it right!

This quiz amused me because for all of them, I put same except for pen/pin and feel/fill. I'm still boggled how one could possibly pronounce cot/caught, merry/mary/marry, don/dawn, or father/bother differently!

all of them are different to me. I should do a voice post, and would if i had a headset!

According to the test, my accent is Northern. (Hey, lots of planets have a north!) By "Northern" the test means "upstate New York" (around Albany and Buffalo), "the Great Lakes region" or "Western New England" (which is the closest the test comes to where I really live--SOUTHERN New England.)

perhaps the accents are similar, but I doubt it, as I said above, Henry Higgins it aint!
