So, I've had my contract from PD Publishing and it looks ok to me. But what do I know.

Anyway, I work in a solicitors office, with a specialist media section, so I ask them to look it over. It just shows you how ruddy MEAN my firm is as they want to charge me £100 for it (and this is considered cheap).

£100 might be peanuts to said solicitors earning £50k plus a year, but for someone on a fraction of that, it's a big deal. Wankers. I have an agent who said "If PD Publishing accepts your book I will help you with the negotiations at a reduced rate." Well that's big of him. As far as I am concerned, having an agent means that he touts you to many different publishers and then attempts to get you the best deal.

So I'm torn. The legal advice is out, so I'll have to read the contract carefully and ask questions where I am not sure. But the agent? I'm still half tempted to go for it. After all - once I'm signed with him, he'll pimp Transgressions if I ever finish it.

Ho hum. I wish I knew someone else who had been published at PD Publishing. I sort of remember that it was someone on the Torquere yahoo group who mentioned them as a decent firm, so I'll have to scour the back entries.

And happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] dubaiyan! I'm considering doing you Horatio/Hamlet Blank verser pre-slash, so be warned.

Hmm.

Well, there may be websites or resources out there that will help you with the legal boilerplate. I'd definitely suggest looking for some only because that's what I would do if I were lucky enough to be looking at a contract.

As for the agent, you probably know this already, but I've read that it is easier to get published if you have an agent. Naturally the agent is going to take a bite out of your royalties but it might be worth it in terms of exposure.

There should be somewhere you can check on the agent's reputation, I would think.

*hugs*
