Ooo. An Agent's asked to see a partial. And they aren't blacklisted on Preditors & Editors - Good Times!

To add to the 2 articles we already have in our "nuts and bolts" section of the Erotic Authors Assocation website - I'd like to add a list of "Things I wish I'd known when I started out"

Things like:

  • Some review sites/magazines/papers will only review your book before its published.
  • Check your agent on Preditors & Editors before going any further with them.
  • Learn how to format your document.

All that sort of thing. Things that we've had to learn through hard knocks and experience. Things we wish we'd KNOWN.

Any suggestions to add to the list? I'll credit, happily.

Never pay for an editor your agent suggests?
Never pay for your book to be published?

Take the time to research a publisher, esp. thier financials, track record, and other books they've published, before getting all tickled that they're going to publish you. (ESPECIALLY if you're working without an agent)

Learn the real names of the editors you work with whenever possible, and keep one eye on their careers -- you will run into bad apples and knowing who they 'really' are allows you to avoid working with them twice. (Esp. true in erotica)

Also: congrats on the agent wanting to see the partial1

I'd advise posting a link to http://www.sfwa.org/writing/. It has all sorts of useful articles on the basics, manuscript preparation, critiquing, characterization, historical accuracy, hunting for a literary agent, starting again after you've stalled for a while, contracts, copyrights, etc. Quite possibly one of the most useful sites out there for writers, and one that focuses on both the creative and the business aspects of the profession.

There should be also a link to Writer Beware as well. It's one of the best advocates of writers (and one of the fiercest battlers of scams) out there.

Hurrah at the partial! Here's hoping they like what they see...

For the website, it's definitely worth stressing the dangers of "publishing houses" that demand exorbitant sums of money for an over-priced, low-quality product, while claiming to be "the only publisher that cares about the newbie."

WOO re partial.

Must say that you do inspire me to actually try write original fic. Though... where do you find time? I tend to stare at the concept, panic, and go and hide for a while in my cupboard.

Thanks hun.

You should - if you have a concept, then you SHOULD. Although you do have more to DO than I!

Where do I find the time? I force myself to stay behind an hour every day at work, that helps a lot, I find it easier to write at work for some reason than at home.

Just start something, if you know your character - he'll help.

congrats
