I didn't know what to expect and I admit that I really liked it...

That is what I saw of it... I am the world's biggest wuss when it comes to gore and this is a very beautifu and stylish gore-fest. I had my eyes shut. A Lot.

I knew of the urban legend that was Sweeney, but I hadn't ever seen any version of the show, I don't like Sondheim much. I know everyone raves about him, but for me i can't get into these "modern" musicals where the songs don't appear to have any actual melody. I know that makes me sound like an old git, but I like a tune I can sing, afterwards.  I wouldn't go and get the soundtrack to this, because it would lose its magic by not seeing it being performed.

Performances were absolutely top-notch, though, and there wasn't a dud one amongst the pack of them. Depp sings like an early David Bowie in the role, Bonham-Carter was a little bit hard to understand at times, but she nailed the character well I thought.  Toby was brilliant and Rickman was excellent too. But for me, the incandescent beauty of the film was the young man in my new icon here, Jamie Campbell Bower and I am in LOVE.

He's a little younger in the icon here and I can't find any movie stills of him but he's got IT, whatever that is, the thing that makes the camera warm to him. Not just beauty but something else.  He's just about exactly what I consider my teenager, Alex, looks like in my WIP.

OOO - FOUND SOME!!  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2570429/photogallery-ss-0

Severus is being a bit clingy and has been demanding cuddles. That's fine but he won't support himself and that's awkward when I'm typing. We've (finally) compromised. He's on the desk with a paw on the back of my left hand.

I have two short stories to write by the end of the month, and I need to do some more reviews for Speak Its Name. Only Hayden Thorne and I seem to be reviewing there at the moment, which is a big shame. It slows the output down, as we are both busy people, so if you fancy reviewing any gay historicals you've read or you'd like to review the few I have PDFs for and I haven't got around to yet, then just yell and I'll send them over. But have a look at the review format first - I want reviews rather than "plot plot plot plot plot and one sentence of I liked it/I didn't like it"

^_^ This is what Pickles does, but the compromise never lasts! Next his rump weights my arm down until it goes numb, then suddenly, half of him is across the keyboard. Pushing him away only starts the cycle again. Makes me loathe to clear the desk off! but he's just so cute!

Yes, Severus does this too, it's like glacial shift and I don't even see him doing it. One minute he's apparently snoozing on the desk, and the next minute he's back in my arms again...

*frowns*

Oh, I had the same reaction to Jamie Campbell Bower. He's got the most angelic voice, and since 'Johanna' is one of my favourite songs from the show, it made me absolutely melt onscreen.

I can't stand young girlish guys like this chap, but that doesn't matter, because Johnny Depp!!! I covet his Sweeny hair, oh yes! I have black/grey hair anyway, and my goodness, is that Cruella-cool.

Darlin!

Can't STAND him. A music director I had once upone a time referred to him as "a composer in search of a tune."

I concur. =-)

I'm in love the moment he opened his mouth to sing Johanna! Especially after Snape was threatening to rape him when he was all bloody and still have that stalkerish glint to his eyes! X-D

I like a tune I can sing, afterwards

If I like a song enough, I'll find a way to sing it somehow, someway, even if it's sung by three different people D:
(That time when Sweeney Todd, Anthony and the Beggar Woman sang "Johanna")

I've been obsessively listening (and singing along) to the Sweeney Todd soundtrack over and over, driving my 13 y.o. cousin crazy. Heh. Have some of them pretty much memorized by now.

...and also writing Maddened by the Stars, a pastiche where: Sirius = Sweeney
Bellatrix = Mrs Lovett
Anthony = Harry
Judge Turpin = Snape
Beadle = Remus
Benjamin Barker = Lucius
Lucy Barker = Narcissa
Johanna Barker = Draco

MWAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. Ahem.

I love how they interpret Toby's relationship with Mrs Lovett in this movie <333

Bless Severus' furry arse. :) Puss watched me earlier rearranging the throws on the sofa and tidying it up. He watched every move I made, head nodding and eyes locked on everything I was doing. Then, when I'd finished, he moved to the middle of the sofa and jumped up with a "Ma!" as if saying "Thanks for making my bed for me!"

Sweeny Todd....I didn't even know it was a musical until watching Johnathan Ross the other night. Johnny Depp tho...nomnomnom.

I think I may have to go and see Sweeney Todd. If only for the nostalgia. You see, the original play (I can't remember if it had songs, but it may well have done) was written by one of the actors at our local theatre, Chris Bond. So I saw it there quite a few times (while working as a front-of-house voluntary assistant).

Alas, I also like a tune I can sing afterwards.

Yes! Snape all being so menacing.."Catamites from Greece..."

And nice to see Rickman has lost weight - hopefully he'll be a thinner Snape at least, EVEN IF HE IS 40 years too old.

When he wants to be - like all cats.!!!!

*laughs* I love the way your Puss's mind works.

Nice mummy.

I agree with Wossi's opinion though, definitely a mix between Anthony Newley and David Bowie.

nom nom indeed!!

yes! It mentioned Chris Bond! I think you'd enjoy it, the non-memorable songs are saved by the performances.

So does he! I'm positive he's been here before! "EvOl Mummy though..cuz that skinny, silver cat is on Mummy's lap far too often for my liking." The amount of times he does a paw screen dump is unbelievable!

Ooooh, nice mix ;) I like the gothy hairdo, hehe. Very Scissorhands.

Well he hits the nail on the head, really. I don't know the show at all, so I didn't miss anything and didn't know of any changes. I liked the fact that there were no "Consider Yourself" street songs with dancing Londoners and that it was more operatic in feel than musical. And none of them are musical performers but I liked that too! :) Less of Sondheims music=always a bonus.
