I realize I am in a minority here, but I have disliked Olivier in pretty much everything I've ever seen him in. Particularly Shakespeare.

I didn't think much of him either. I quite liked him in Rebecca, and you aren't at all in the minority as no-one has voted for him! I'm horrified that Firth is getting all the votes!

I love Cushing but have not seen him as Darcy. Nor did I see Rintoul. I should probably confess that I am not a great P&P fan -- I prefer productions where Elizabeth falls in love with the house, not the man. *g*

I loved him in Rebecca, first at the impressionable age of ten, and still even now. I have accepted my weakness. :)

I can't IMAGINE Cushing as DArcy! My perceptions are coloured by his horror film work.

if you can get hold of a copy, yes! he was wonderfully icy. I just was never convinced by Firth.

What I like about Firth is his voice. I don't have a lot invested in Darcy as a character but I want him to turn me on at least a little, which Macfadyen didn't do for me (and Olivier never does, and I haven't seen the others)!

I can't really vote because I've only seen two of them (Olivier and Firth). I think all the votes for Firth might say more about the ages of the people on your flist and the pervaisiveness of TV than anything else.

I really liked Firth in the role, so my vote goes for him - but I do recall seeing Rintoul in the part, years ago when that version was new, and liking him (and the series) very much. In fact it's not long ago that I was wondering if I shouldn't buy that series on DVD just to see how well I'd like it today.

He really, truly does. I just love everything about that film. But he didn't do it for me as Darcy or as Heathcliff. Not sure why with the former, but I didn't think he was scary enough as Heathcliff.

What's wrong with Colin Firth's Darcy? I thought he was perfect. He was sufficiently uptight in the early scenes, but able to make a plausible transformation in his attitude later on. He was a bit repressed but with hidden passion. That's Darcy exactly.

I found Olivier too stuffy to ever win Elizabeth over. Matthew MacFadyen, although more attractive, had the opposite problem: I thought he didn't come across as even superficially proud or arrogant, and was much too open in his manner. That was partly due to the script of the 2005 version, which took ridiculous liberties with the dialogue. "You have bewitched me, body and soul" is just not something Darcy would say, for example.
Colin Firth, on the other hand, was ju-u-ust right.

Nothing wrong with him, really, but he couldn't be less like Darcy for my personal taste.

As I said before, I think it really matters what age you were when you saw a definitve version, like one's favourite Dr Who.

I must confess that I'm one of those who voted for Colin Firth--the "wet t-shirt Darcy". Yes, it was because I saw him in the part at just the right time, and he became the definitive Darcy for me. But I do agree with batboy126. He was perfect in the part.

Have you read Pamela Aiden's fanfic trilogy about Darcy? She said that she was inspired to write them after seeing Colin Firth's Darcy. She said something like his performance made her realize that his inner struggle might be worth writing about.

I suppose it's just that there's something about Firth that I just don't get, I don't find him attractive at all. I remember seeing a documentary about that scene where he comes upon Elizabeth after being in the lake and the director says that he told Colin to imagine he was getting a hard-on and that explains his look of ambivalence. I think that's another reason why I don't like him in the role!!
