Well, the GOOD news is that he's perfectly healthy, no sign of toxins, no liver or kidney damage, no heart or lung problems. I just paid a King's Ransom for them to tell me there's nothing much wrong with him. [livejournal.com profile] asphodeline, the sooner you start that Vet Voucher scheme, the BETTER.

Which of course points directly to epilepsy. The vet said he's of the right age for fits to start but they don't automatically prescribe anything for the condition unless it becomes chronic, so all I have to do is keep an eye on him and make a note of when (if ever, hope not) he has any more fits. If he ever gets to the stage of one a day then they'll give him drugs for it, but they hesitate from doing so because 1. the fits don't hurt his health (other than falling off window sills or the danger he might be if outside) and 2. the drugs are quite toxic and can cause damage and as he's so young, cheeky (he was purring all through his examination) and well, they don't want to start poisoning him.

So it's a waiting game, and lets hope it was a one-off. Thanks to everyone who left good wishes. I can't tell you how much it means to me.

Aw, lil Sevvie and his evOl eyes, lol. *pets*

Good to know he's ok. I do know that elevated temperature can cause seizures...that and suddenly withdrawing from alcohol, but I doubt the latter is happening, lol. Has he had many fits or just the one? Was he just a little too warm...or had some sort of infection on board at the time?

Purring @ examination, hehe. Just like Puss once he was dragged from his carrier. "Oooh, I remember you Miss Nice Vet *purrpurr*"

Well he had a through examination and she said that he was perfectly healthy - I guess it COULD be the alcohol!! :)

As far as I know, that the only fit, but it's impossible to tell as I work full-time, so he could have been having them before...

So let's hope for the best and it's good to hear that at least for now he is doing fine.

Thanks hun, he's a little stressed from the experience, but very clingy.

At least he has a loving mum to coddle him! I'm glad to hear he's healthy. My friend didn't want to medicate her cat either and goodness, just so you know, that was at least a decade ago and the cat is still going strong.

He wasn't much of a snuggler or demanding cat, but whenever he had a fit he stayed close by after.

Oh that's a relief, as long as he doesn't fall again or do it in the middle of the road, he should be ok.

Thanks hun

So glad the cat is well

Did you realize that cat's purr when they are nervous? Like some people laugh?

I realized that when I took my boys in for their shots. They were terrified and shedding and both purred away like idiots. The vet and aide were so impressed that the 'kitty cats were purring for them', that I couldn't help but laugh.

I know those two and they were NOT happy purring. Once home I had a cat wrapped around each ankle, promising to be good and behave and begging me to never take them to that place again! :)

oh yes, I knew that, but this was disgusting "aren't I gorgeous and you will LOVE me and while I'm here I'll rub my face all over your coz you are new and I love new people."

He's a slut, I'm ashamed.

ohhh, that's bad. cat slut - that could get it's cat license revoked!

Sorry (on my presumption)- I am glad that you know your cat that well. I am amazed how little people know about their most intimiate companions, cats, dogs, husbands, etc.

When my cats had their booster shots, I noticed some swelling a few days later and called the vet to ask about it. He was surprised that I had noticed it and said it was normal and would dissipate.

Isn't one of the reasons for having a cat to touch it and know how it feels and what makes it happy?

I am a well trained cat human. :)

Exactly! How would one spot things like this and ticks if one didn't handle them every day!

Well done!

I didn't see the earlier post, but, man, now that I have -- that must have been super scary. I am glad that there's nothing nasty wrong and maybe he won't have another seizure. Did they tell you what to do if it did happen again to keep him safe?

I'm doing the right thing, apparently, just holding him gently to make sure he doesn't roll over and hurt himself, and not panic. it was more of a shock that he fell off a high windowsill onto a hard chair, he could have broken something, poor baby.

It's good news but a bit annoying too of course. We'll have to keep things crossed.

I'm feeling more serious about the vouchers. Maybe there's a national vet council or something i could write to. We will make our mark for our pussycats!!

Poor little guy! (Poor little you, too!) I hope it was just a passing short-circuit.

Have you looked into acupuncture? A quick google of "veterinary acupuncture, epilepsy," turned up a bunch of sites, including this one
http://www.advancedveterinarycarecenter.com/faqs.asp?faqID=2 Looks like it's a good option. My acupuncturist in Ohio occasionally treated animals, and my former vet there had taken her dog for acupuncture. No dangerous side-effects at all, and not all that uncomfortable--much less than a vaccination.

I spent some of this am at the vet, too--pre-op tests for my dog. They should be able to take the lump off next week, hopefully soon enough that the cancer hasn't spread. (crossing fingers)

the vet did say it might just be a one-off, i can only hope.

Thanks for that info! I'll look into it if it gets worse!

Oh poor dog! I missed that post, I think, I hope doggie gets the all clear

She's 15, and at this age every day's a gift. The lump appeared right on top of her head, easy to spot, and it's a skin tumor, easy to remove-- but she's going to look like she's been thru the wars when it comes off. It isn't a 'wild' agressive cancer, the vet says, so her chances are good. Thanks!

I'm glad he's all right, at least at the moment, although it can't be a nice feeling wondering when the next (if any) fit's going to happen. But as you say, it might be a one-off, so good on the vet for not poisoning him.

they are a good vet, they don't rec invasive treatment unnecessarily which many vets do.

Thanks, hun

I'm glad to hear that the vet's hopeful that this'll be, if not a one-off, something he can cope with. And most glad they're not poisoning him with medication on the off chance! If going to the vet has to cost more than going to the doctor (if NHS isn't in the picture) you have, at least, got trustworthy vets. (I remember when I lived with a friend in London, as a student, five cats of hers and one of mine, the vets kept us broke. At least her paycheque covered the rent!)

Now how do you keep a cat off high places if he might have a fit today? Ow. You just have to cross your fingers for him, as with so many things about cats' health, safety and happiness. That extra clinginess might be a pointer, if he still feels uncertain after having a fit in your absence. But maybe he won't; he's young and in good shape.

Love him lots!

Hope everything goes well with the kitty. :/

When I was teenager, our dog had epilepsy. We had pills to give her if she had a fit but we hardly ever used them because it was very seldom. She had maybe three or four episodes her entire life, that we saw, and there were people in the house most of the time. Hopefully your boy will be the same way. [crossed fingers]
