First stage of edit: done! I think it's definitely better for it, she's whittled out the omniescent where necessary (even if I still don't get it...) and has asked very good questions where they needed asking.  On to the next 100 pages! *soldiers on*

I have two posts up on blogs today:

Gay Love Poetry over at The Macaronis Kiss me with your mouth.... (Damn Tintin bloody Duffy to hell for ruining the Song of Solomon)

and

An article about Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladies up on Lust Bites. Which was not about Covent Garden, or ladies - or even written by Harris!!  Confused?  You won't be!

The weather is perfect, and everything I love about Autumn. Still warm, no noticeable breeze but with a touch of smoke in the air and the promise of frost.  Foggy evenings and mackerel mornings. Yum.  *adores Autumn SO MUCH*  How's everyone? I've been skimming my flist, but haven't been paying a great deal of attention.

Have a lovely Norfolk Broads autumnal picture!

Although I would very much love to slash Solomon with anything male within the Bible - I very much doubt that that poem is homoerotic. The poetic device of writing from a woman point of view is a VERY common Hebrew literary practice (ie - men writing from the point of view of a woman... and by the way vice versa in modern Hebrew poetry too).

Initially this sequence of poems was believed to be a series of love poems between a woman and god since so much of it is very surreal and exaggerated ... yet that in itself is a very common literary device going back to Sumerian cultures (Gilgamesh and Enkidu are described as giants for example).

Can't quote you off-hand the academic text I have read this from but they were many being a daughter of an ex- historical bible lecturer who is, by the way, NOT religious in the least.

So - as much as I would LOVE to see the gay in everything - I have to assume that Solomon was not... sorry ^^;;.

And just as an after thought - in response to the article linked to it. In my experience the academic world never had any problem seeing gay relationship in the bible. The David and Jonathan thing, although not specifically using the sexual term "knowing" is still looked upon as more than close friendship.

THAT however just strike me as those sensationalist research brought forth to draw attention. It is standing against a lot more convincing research into the subject. And the hint is in the "quoting" of the dead sea scroll... why do everyone do that? There is no different masculine version in the dead sea scroll - the masculine verbs are all THERE in the good book itself "Yishakeni Mineshikot Pihu" is masculine full stop... still doesn't make it gay...

And no - I am not referring to Solomon thousand wives since that could easily be a literary exaggeration AND would probably have a lot more to do with political ties forged and sealed through marital union.

Last night smelled of autumn, for the first time. Granted, it is miserable, cold, wet and grey and nasty up here in Scotland, but it is ALWAYS like that, so you never know which season it is. :-D Still, last night, when I got out of the gym, it smelled wet and chilly and of decaying leaves. I love it.

I agree - the smell is fabulous. Severus is in and out all day he comes in now smelling of leaf mould and moss. Yum.
