Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] lunalelle!

Went to see Ghost Town.  Now, let me say right up front, I am NOT a fan of Ricky Gervaise.  I don't get his humour.  I am of the opinion that he's not in the least funny - and that he's having the rest of us on - people laugh at him because they are told he is funny. The Emperor's New Clothes of modern humour. Office: Unfunny. Extras: no. Please. He's exactly the same person in any role, same as he is on any chat show, uncharismatic, rude and... just don't get him.

BUT - that being said - despite the fact that I was sitting there like Esme Weatherwax with my arms folded thinking "go on, make me laugh" - and despite that I only laughed twice, and neither time at Mr Gervaise -it was an enjoyable film, the kind of quiet unassuming comedy that perhaps Jimmy Stewart made (one of the not terribly great ones). Stewart often played roles where he wasn't funny but the world around him became funny because he interracted with it.  I'm not really comparing Stewart to Gervaise, though!

However - there's not an original thought in it - if you've seen Groundhog Day, or Scrooge, then you've seen this film already.

Next week BOND!!!!! On my birthday! *fans self*

I suggested to my editor that Transgressions might be better with a map of the southern and eastern counties of England printed in it, and she agrees.  She doesn't know the logistics or cost of having this done but she's going to go and investigate.Whoop!  Can't talk about the editing, as it's hell on earth. *glum*

I usually don't like the Ricky Gervais type humor, but that movie cracked me up.

Thanks! <3

I don't get Gervaise either, but he gave other people the best lines in the only clips of extras I saw. The Office was just hideously embarrassing.

I love maps in books. I like to know where everyone is and enjoy having little mental conversations with myself like "Average max speed 10 mph with ordinary hired nags, so they'd need to change teams at Tunbridge Wells".

Yes, that will leave me open to people going "but how did he get there so quickly?" won't it - although I think I've got the time/distances right. *worries*

That's very true. You don't want to end up with the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves arrangement, whereby one gets from Dover to Sherwood Forest via Hadrian's Wall in under a day... *g*

"Ah ha!" said Cromwell! "We leave Cornwall today! Tomorrow we fight at Naseby"

er... no.

Oh yes, the Gladiator effect! Where Maximus Decius rides those two horses over an incredibly long distance without, apparently, giving them time to feed.

I'd bet a considerable amount that you haven't made a mistake.
