I am very much indebted to Chris Smith for introducing me to Etherpad, I know the thought of writing in public scares most of you shitless, and it did me, at first but now I’m enjoying it. I don’t invite everyone in like I did that first time, just a few people, the same people who are reading the book as I finish the chapters, but it’s good to get instant feedback – and there’s a couple of extra eyes to spot inconsistencies and stuff like “Jude reached for his sneakers.”

Only kidding, he wouldn’t be seen dead in anything less than Victorian Nike.

I’m getting a routine too, slowly. (about time, after a year not working, eh?) I write from 12ish to 1 and Chris waves the pom poms and the whip of procrastination, then she writes in her lunch break and I throw peanuts from the gallery.

The thing is, I was chatting to Sleveen earlier and telling her how much it has helped me, because if there’s someone watching I have to write, and not goof off and go and do something else.  Then I said “It probably is something in my nature – it’s a famous family legend that I refused to walk as a child, and then my parents discovered that I would only walk when people applauded.”

I think that says everything about me that you need to know.

And – oh good grief isn’t Race Wank over YET?. Who the heck made you the Race Fairy?

While I think RaceFail is an important subject and the dialogue is far from over--it's wading through the wank & circumstance that's giving everyone the impression that it's just one big LJ drama, and it's not. I agree though, I'm quite sick and tired of the hubris that seems to be wafting in whenever she posts on the subject - it's as if she's incapable of taking a stand on anything without bringing her personal issues with others to the soap box. This is a pity, because most times she's right--but man, she loves to bludgeon the horse.

I think Ms. Giggles said it best [not sure if she was talking about Ms Somerville or not, so I wont she was--]

"...really, some of us have better things to do than to validate your sense of importance."

The best entry on the Race discussions, sans immature axe-grinding, is here:

Ho shit - I just saw what she did over at Rydra Wong LJ. How utterly ignorant and full of fail. Honestly - this is why people are avoiding the subject, because of crap like that. Linking to arguments with someone and bashing them has NOTHING to due with the race discussion. Talk about shit-stirring.

Absolutely. It's the main reason (other than the whole thing is as boring as fuck) I'm staying out of discussing it.

I don't find it boring. I think it effect all of us as writers and people. This is not a subject that exists in a vacuum on the internet. ^_^ I found Mary Ann Mohanraj's take on all this, profound.

It's worth reading - as for discussion - I too have avoided all of it because of people like Shetterly and his friends, and Coffee and Ink. With all due respect, even I knew her real name by googling it ages ago when she criticized 'Yaoi Fan girls aren't even fans of Yaoi' because I wanted to know who she was and why she sounded like a elitist ass. I had no altercation with her because a translated article from ComiPress ended up validating the portion of my entry that she disagreed with, [vindication is nice, but not worth wanking over]. I knew her name was out there-- only recently though did she claim a demand for privacy, of which Shetterly violated, and sparked the drama upon which Sommerville is milking for attention. :/ This is the sort of baggage that's defining what is otherwise a very good discussion about race.

BTW this isn't call to express your opinion. :) I've not blogged or commented anywhere on it other than in private conversation. I choose to lead by example-- my actions in RL and my career speak louder than my opinions.

No, you misunderstand me, I find it boring to discuss because I'm not up to doing the big discussion. I don't express myself well enough. I've read a fair bit of it, though.

I suppose you and I will have to agree to disagree on the importance of the current conversations about race in spec fic and why as a non white writer I find them important. Many good things have come out of these conversations already, and I am hopeful that trend will continue.

As far as the online posting of work for feedback, are you at all concerned that these pieces will be at risk for being seen as published by possible presses? I’m wondering since their instant feedback sounds like a great thing, but I’m unsure how their group you mention works.

I don't know what your views are, and I'm sure I haven't given mine, enough people have views. so I doubt that we disagree, really.

As to etherpad - nothing's published on line. It's simply a private chat room, not a group of any kind.

I think the race issue is a very serious one, but from what I've seen of the current discussion... it desperately needs a moderator. I don't think it's something that could possibly be resolved on LJ because from what I've read, a lot of it does degenerate into wanking on personal issues. A few people who probably are not likely to give offense in the first place leap in, bending over backwards to show that they're not part of the problem, which is good, but... I don't believe in giving anybody of any persuasion carte blanche to critique one's writing with the promise that the writer will make it alll better... because, y'know? I have friends of various races, and they Do Not Always Agree on issues. What happens when a writer gets an angry letter that Character Q is good, but character X would NEVER do behavior Z or think N and another equally pissed off reader says that Character X is dead-on, but Character Q is totally wrong?

What I would love to see in that hairtangle is for someone to clearly define what it is they expect from writers who are not people of color. Whirling around in an angry muddle may be useful for venting, but I don't see where it's going to do any actual good.

And the thing is -- the people who are most likely to offend are off on their own LJs justifying their actions, and a great many of us who try to be conscientious about writing any "other" are not going to get into the self-abnegation and drama of the whole thing. If I judge people, it's by who they are and what I see them do, not where they came from or what color their skin is. I'll admit to being wary of some cultures, like the Muslims in the Middle East, because I'm a woman and I am not keen on cultures that consider my gender in terms of breeding potential. But then, I'm not keen on fundamentalist Christianists for the same reason.

Sigh.

Gah - yes, I agree, trouble is there's so much of it, that the size of the discussion is offputting by itself, let alone the vitriol. And the outing, which is another issue entirely.

Fleury is likely to encounter slaves in america. Am I looking forward to writing that. No, brother.

Ahh, but you do your homework on these things, and you don't dodge the nasty parts. 'ey, I read Standish! And yeah, I know, really fun to wade through lots of really nasty historical documents like auction papers and so on.
I have the sense that a lot of people take what they're given as schoolhouse history and really don't know how they got here. They just buy lots of clothes with skull prints on them and wear too much kohl. *eyeroll*

by which i mean it's a 'middle-class' value to claim a discussion should have a clearly established authority figure because bourgies need explicit hierarchy in order to know where they rank, and where they rank above or below others (whom to belittle or defer to).

i been seeing a lot of that, er, middle-class mentality among people who claim racefail is 'too wide-ranging' or 'too sprawling', etc.

it's interesting...and telling.

:) A dreadful tale isn't it? I think that probably all parents do that when the child first takes its first steps, but for me it obviously triggered some hideous needy diva gene and I kept it up until I was about 3, apparently. Oh the shame. After that, my parents noticed that if I could avoid walking at all (skates, bike, horse, pogo stick, bus, being carried) I would.
