Firstly, some fun.  Pop along to Jessewave’s Blog and join in the discussion about sex scenes and when it becomes too much and becomes gratuitous.

I really love people who say “I don’t know anything about xxx genre”, and then proceed to spout their views about it. /sarcasm.

Authors do not owe their readers anything. Discuss. They really don’t, you know? I could sit down and write about a disturbing older man who leers over underage boys(Death in Venice), or another who has sex with underage girls (Lolita). I could write paedophilia, murder and necrophilia in war-time Vienna.(Vienna Dolorosa)  And I would have no “duty” to the reader when I wrote any of that – or anything else.  It’s up to the publisher to decide to publish it, and then, as Chris says, up to the reader to decide to buy, or not.

Blackguards! has been started. And I’ve made myself cry already. Annoyingly the story has to start with emo, as it’s only a day or two after Fleury sets off and leaves Ambrose behind.  However, talking of behinds, I’m sure he’ll stop being an Emo-Maudlin-darkly furious Irishman and will turn things around at the first sign of a pretty pair of cheeks.  He’s not the kind of man to stay maudlin for long.

Chris hit the nail on the head with her discussion of what writers "owe" readers - I don't "owe" anybody anything and I'd love someone to try and tell me that I do.

I could sit down and write about a disturbing older man who leers over underage boys(Death in Venice), or another who has sex with underage girls (Lolita). I could write paedophilia, murder and necrophilia in war-time Vienna.(Vienna Dolorosa)

Precisely so...and if we enlarge and lengthen the metaphor *cough*, I should really be consulting with anaemic, melanin-deficient Romanians who are allergic to garlic and have irregular dentition. How can I possibly know what it means to be 400 years old and be driven to drink blood?

I should be ashamed of myself for appropriating their culture.

And I am. I am very, very deeply ashamed. :>

I honestly don't care what people think I'm allowed to write that don't buy or read my books.

In many cases, that sounds like the impotent talking about sex.
