That makes me see red.

I have been researching the 1920s for “I Knew Him” – and came across Bill Tilden. Not being sporty, I’d not heard of this tennis superstar before and my characters are currently discussing him. It’s rather amusing that (coincidentally) he had accusations of homosexuality levelled at him. But he was rather gorgeous, all the same.

What made me growl was this section regarding Anderson, someone who purports to be a friend:

Art Anderson of Burbank, who took lessons from Tilden since he was eleven years old and remained a life-long loyal friend, reported nothing of Tilden's sexual advances

GAH! This is the same kind of attitude which leads to those snide comments “don’t bend down in the shower” etc etc.  I’m gobsmacked that whoever wrote this article would phrase that in this way. So many people still think that homosexuals will proposition EVERYONE, and not that they are just as discriminating as anyone else.

Grrr.

Anyway, here’s his picture. He’s rather lovely

I have been trying to tell my partner this for years. What the Hell makes him think that a gay man would fancy him? :D

Exactly. I actually liked the way this got turned on its head in Friends when Chandler got annoyed when someone said that some gay bloke was out of his league.

:)

This is the kind of thing…

Oh and I can see the picture now, which I couldn't before in my phone. Mmm...topping! He looks like he could play a five setter without breaking a sweat or mussing his hair or anything else ungentlemanly.

While I absolutely share your indignation, I might address this in a post of my own, as I have some personal POV on this that might be of interest to some others on my FL.

No she doesn't. Chocolate biscuits - I'll fight you to the death for my right to call them that!

We have both in Canada--it seems to me the biscuits are a little denser than cookies, and less sweet--more like heavy, solid crackers. And then there's ship's biscuits, which are more like Pratchett-dwarf projectile ammunition...

He was lovely (so were the Doherty brothers from the Edwardian era who won just about everything and were English).

The 'advances' thing is interesting. My three teenage daughters would tell you that the average het bloke chats up anything that's vaguely attractive. They get so frustrated at being continually hit on.

He's so UPRIGHT and cool looking. I can't see him all dirty and sweaty and grunting. (although I can... just not playing tennis.) hee.

That's phrased in a peculiar way. On the one hand, if Tilden did make advances and Anderson said "no thanks" and that was the end of it... no, it's not worth mentioning. If Tilden was prone to proposition everyone persistently--and some guys are--that's slightly different. Without sufficient information, even mentioning it sounds kind of stupid.

It's amusing that the people who get most worked up over the fear of being propositioned are often those with the least genuine chance of it.
