Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] treva2007!! Have a good one!

My tablet has arrived!  Eeee!  I swear, it’s probably just as well that I don’t have a decent amount (e.g. any) of money because I’d spend it all on gadgets.

This is it.

Named Snowy for the Tin Tin books. I shall hug it and kiss it (but not squeeze it, because…)

I’m already madly in love with the thing, and I haven’t even got it connected to the net yet. And yes, Hell hath frozen over; Erastes has bought an e-reader. But of course it’s not JUST an e-reader, it’s a photo frame, and a browser, and a Skype-y thing, and a chat module and you can even use Microsoft Office. Who wants powerpoint on a tablet for gawd’s sake? GAH. Thank god I don’t have TINY TINY hands or I’d be throwing my laptop away. There’s no way in hell I’d ever buy an ipad (unless rolling in it as mentioned previously) and this is a quarter of the size of an ipad anyway!

Immediate reaction: It’s a little heavy – definitely heavier than a paperback, so reading it in bed might take some strengthening of the wrists, (cough cough) but that’s not a disaster. It’s solid enough, which is good. If it falls on my face it will probably break my nose. :D the newer versions – this is Mark One and they are up to Mark Five already – are wafer thin and very light.

It will definitely need some kind of  protective cover. Waterproof Mithril for preference. I’m hard enough on technology as it is (the only reason my PCs last as long as they is that I can’t move them much) so having this little darling thing with me at all times is going to need it to be a little bit more robust than it is. It is robust though – it doesn’t feel or look cheap, solidly made, and the buttons are workmanlike – and there are only two of them. Most of the actions are done on screen. You get a little stylus for that, but it’s loose and I can bet that will be lost in a week, as there’s nowhere to store it in the machine.

Nice touch, it comes with a universal adaptor. I tell you, this is appreciated. You can buy items in ENGLAND that have a two-pin plug and don’t come with an adaptor. And on Christmas Day you can’t use your device…The manual is tiny too – about an 8th the size of the one for my mobile phone so it doesn’t break the size of manual vs size of object rule (like my phone…)

Can’t work out how to transfer e-books, though – there’s a connection cord to the PC, but although I’ve transferred two of them, it’s not showing up and I have no idea how to search for them as there’s no file manager function or anything. There’s no SD card included, so I think that’s the key – seems much of the functions won’t function without a SD card. The music won’t work either, so I’ll get a card and then hope that it works  - otherwise … it has to go back.

Also solved my Word problem. Who needs Word 21st century? I bought a factory sealed version of Word 97 (which is basically all I’ve ever used, to be honest, and the version I use on the desktop) and it works wonderfully on the laptop.

On an entirely unrelated note – when is someone going to write a SECRET BABY Gay Romance? Preferably Regency.

What does an Android tablet do when it's at home...or elsewhere? Is that like a Kryton suppository? o.O

I'm a little behind the times here. Hahahaha, 'behind' ;p

I was hoping it would transform into a small butler and go and make the tea, but .. sadly no.

The German Kommandant has just asked to be alone with Robert Wagner. And there's no snogging going on!!

the instructions are in Chinklish, though - so i'm going to wait until I have time and no pressure before I try and get it working - need an SD card, too.

you didn't get an sd card with it?
I did, because that's the same one I've got
the problem is it boots from the sd card so bricking it is common, but it's an easy fix
also it holds charge terribly, about two hours with the wifi on, so if you're nowhere near a plug turn the wifi off, it saves the battery on it

you mentioned bricking it before - what does that mean?

Nifty! Not quite as versatile as Lt. Data, but as androids go it looks pretty handy.

I've seen notebook computer covers, foam-padded with a zip, for $5-10. You could wrap a strip of velcro fuzzy around the base of the stylus and put the other side of the velcro in the cover.

I was going to write a Secret Baby into Home, then I found out Davy would've had to be married to the girl for the kid to be eligible to inherit, and he wasn't, so no Sekrit Heir. The baby's still possible, but now there isn't much point to one.
