I was unblocked yesterday. I'd been blocked for several weeks, not for lack of ideas, but for something in real life that was weighing me down and blotting out everything else. However, although the threatened cloud hasn't quite gone away, it's been lessened a lot and things are a little brighter. Yeah - I know - cryptic, but I don't like to dump RL on here, that's not what my LJ is FOR.

Suddenly yesterday the dam broke and I wrote over 1000 words. Nothing for you guys bowing under the weight of NaNo, I know, but for me who hasn't even been able to finish a smutty short story that only needs to sex scene to have it done, this is progress with a P.

Does anyone in my acquaintance know what I can do with a longish story? It's 8K and (currently) doesn't have any sex in it, although it deals with m/m themes. It was written for Outlook Arizona who turned it down, and I've tried Blithe Quarterly and they didn't want it. I'd really appreciate any ideas you guys might have. If anyone wants to see it, just bellow. I've just queried Speciality Publications to see if Men or Freshmen might want it (I'd need to add sex if they do) as a serial, but we'll see what they say. Would it be worth approaching an epublisher?

I'd trunk the story for now. Then pay attention to new calls for submission. Hell, I may be needing such a story for an anthology in the next 6 months.

Some e-publishers publish shorts (Loose Id, Ellora's Cave, etc.) but the only ones I can think of are interested in erotic pieces.

That being said, e-publishing can be very lucrative when you're talking smut.

But as for longish stories with no sex? Hm. Sorry.

I'd love to have a look at it, not just because I love your writing, but because it might give me a better idea about where it might be a good fit.

The thing is that it was written to order. Outlook Arizona wanted something 8-10k which could be serialised in three magazines. They didn't want smut, but it had to be gay themed. 10cents a word so it WOULD have been great if I'd sold it to them. ho hum.

I'll bung it over. Ignore any mistakes.

I'm thinking of giving The Long Story (http://homepage.mac.com/rpburnham/longstory.html) a shot someday. It might work for you (I wouldn't worry about your subject; the journal has a very liberal slant). I think they pay in copies, though, and I don't know if that's acceptable.

Otherwise, shelve it for now, and keep an eye out for submission calls.

A call just dropped into my mailbox via ERWA for a new anthology looking for longer stories: http://lovenotespress.com/submissions.shtml

I'm sure you've seen it by now, but just in case it went astray.

Don't know if they're looking for gay stories, but sometimes you can, uh, un-gay them? Het 'em up?
Good luck. I might submit something myself.

Understand the cryptic message now - are you blocked again? I can understand if you're not bothering with writing at all nowadays, but at the same I can also imagine it might be a relief to write.
