1. So I watched episode one of “The Secret Circle.” Never heard of it, (fpodge put me on to it) assume it’s a book but OMG nothing exactly new about it. Another group of impossibly cute looking 17 year olds but instead of being vampires or the Scoobies, they are witches. And despite that everyone else in “New Salem” (oh puhleeze!) seems to know about witchcraft and it’s banned—no-one notices when one Witchette turns out all the lights on the harbor and then calls a thunderstorm. when someone’s car sets on fire the older witches just say “No, no-one can be practising—we’d know about it.”
really.
However, I shall persevere, just in case.
2. Doctor Who was a complete travesty. I still really really Matt Smith as the Doctor, he’s perfect for the role, but OMG the writers have gone mad/lost their way/trying to be too clever/ or something because I’m THIS close to not bothering with it for the rest of the series. I had already coasted through the first half, because of the impossible to understand stuff but the last two episodes have left me so cold as to be positively angry. Both are riffing off the same themes – that of fear, which has already been done to death even in the New Incarnation of the show, let alone the last one. Plus the dialogue-particularly the Doctor’s is getting to be incomprehensible. He just wibbles away incoherently, breaks off all the time, no-one actually says what’s important and this is Lazy Writing To Create Conflict.
It’s like on the soaps when Phil says “Oh, Kath” (yes, I’m out of touch) “There’s something I….” and Kath interrupts with “not now, Phil, I’ve got see Dot.”
Phil: “But I just wanted…”
Kath: “When we get back, I promise”
and so on. Well last night’s episode of DW was a bit like that.
PLUS the reference was (Gehayi tells me, as I really was so bored as to not even pay much attention) to the minotaurs in The Horns of Nimon from Tom Baker era – pretty well acknowledged as the Worst Story Ever and A Real Off Day for Douglas Adams. I don’t know whether these minotaurs were the same minotaurs as in the Timon thingy and really I don’t actually Care.
When I compre this load of crap with something like The Empty Planet or 42 minutes or Blink. Well they simply DON’T compare. Sticking a minotaur in a Tron/The Shining land (right down to the colours) when we’ve only just had "locked in a doll’s house because of someone’s fear” ONLY LAST WEEK is lame lame lame.
And the whole faith thing? Why was faith being attacked? I have no faith in any god—but even I found it uncomfortable that religion was being mooted as BAD—and then when the Doctor had to force Amy to lose her faith in HIM, well that just left me gasping. The whole core of the series is that the doctor is extra-ordinary, and also extra-ordinarily loyal and angry when his companions are in danger. The Whole “I WILL FIND YOU” he’s always bellowing to his companions is a wonderful bedrock. You know the Doctor will turn over time and space to save you if he can. But then, perhaps the Useless Doctor was established in week one when he let Amy down, which he’s done time and time again.
HOWEVER, one thing that is really pissing me off is Amy and Rory’s “oh well, we’ve lost our baby. Never mind, eh, let’s go and have some more adventures. we’ve seen she grows up all right, so why bother go look for her.” I can believe this from Amy who seems to be a lot less emotional than Rory, but Rory? No. No no no. He protected Amy for TWO THOUSAND YEARS. There’s no way he’s going to give up looking for his daughter because someone bought him an e-type Jag. No no no.
So. Yeah. Am this close to giving it all up.
3. No-one seems to have commented on Torchwood but it ran rings round DW.
