I'm writing something quite insane that will never sell as a short story, but I'm writing it for an anthology call, anyway. It's Gay Regency Romance, written (as far my lesser ability can manage it) in Austenese. (but without the laughs). I think it will be 1. Too long and 2. rejected instantly by the anthology but perhaps one day it will sprout into a novel or something.

Talking of laughs, I watched:

1. The Day After Tomorrow, and have a question. IF the tsunami (which then froze ) that hit New York was coming up to at least floor 20 of the buildings, how is it that the refugees in the New York Library were not drowned? I admit I wasn't really paying full attention...

2. Documentary on Spamalot. I hope it comes to Norwich. I'm really tempted to go to London to see it, to be honest. It looks brilliant. "This is a song that goes like this!" I hadn't actually ever read anything about it, so I had no idea what it was about, and it looks deliciously silly. Which is just the sort of thing I like.

I was disgusted with myself and spent the weekend sitting in front of the lap top doing absolutely NOTHING, chatting, eating, watching TV and playing the most STUPID and ultimately addictive game called Bear Pairs (and yes, Brits, it IS from "Smile" the children's TV programme. My highest score is 700. I DARE you lot to do better.

I was supposed to go to Cafe Writer's tonight, but I'm cold I don't think I will. *chicken*

And if he's NOT dead. There will be major trouble.

Well, Spamalot is hilarious and brilliant. And a good excuse to come to London.

You really can't apply logic to the Day After Tomorrow. You can't.
If another ice age hit the earth no one could hike through like Dennis Quaid did...and oh so much more..well an ice age would not suddenly happen over a weekend. I think it is more a slowly moving thing like what is happening now with global warming.

But it is a fun pic to watch and eat popcorn too..

I'm sort of glad I didn't pay it more attention - the bear pairs won out, but the effects were pretty amazing.

I've seen Spamalot twice now, and it is quite possibly the funniest piece of theatre ever. It lost *nothing* the second time around-- the laughs were just as fresh for me as they were the first time. I don't know about the London cast, but in the Broadway cast, you could really see that the actors were having just as much fun as the audience. I would see it a third time in a heartbeat. Er... assuming someone else was paying for the tickets. I can't afford to keep shelling out for them!

I'm sure it will run and run and people will be treating like Rocky Horror (if they aren't already)

Spamalot

I Wikipedia'd it & in the cast of characters is the Lady of the Lake: "an aquatic diva." LOL.

The documentary was good - and they put her in because they said they needed A Girl (as all the films were just all the boys) and found that she became the lead! I would have been just as happy with Arthur/Brave Sir Robin, of course.

Spamalot is wonderful. We saw it in NYC last spring - highly recommended.

Got up at 4 am, so am home - have 600 emails on my regular account to go through. Ugh.

I remember you seeing it, but at the time I didn't know anything about it - didn't get much press over here, and I just assumed it was some big Broadway show done by Americans, I didn't know it was Eric Idle.

Was Tim Curry in it when you went?

Sadly, no Tim Curry. But we had Hank Azaria (Mystery Men, Simpsons, etc.) as gay Lancelot, and he was brilliant.

And he'd better be dead. Sirius had to stay dead, after all. Grrr. Better hope it's a flashback that's giving her trouble.

or perhaps it's his portrait, but I fear that's not right and that the phoenix is really significant.

The doors were closed. Water is polite like that, and anyways, people were smart enough to not open when it knocked because they smell the trap.

Or something. I never saw the film, but I heard people could run faster than the cold in there, so, I guess the filmakers took some liberties.

Why not a Gay Regency? I swear some of Heyer's secondary characters were visiting molly houses. Standish is so grim, I'd love to see you do something a little lighter.

Re: HP...

Dumbledore's familiar was a Phoenix, no?

But are you enjoying it, dark moments or not?*hopes*

Sadly the next two books are particularly dark, I just seem to love causing angst.

But I do want to do a sequel to Standish, concentrating on Fleury which will be FUN, Robbery and Buggery in the New World, or something.

And if this story doesn't sell, (or even if it does, actually) it has a chance of being a novel, and it will probably be lighter than Standish. That's the trouble with m/m historical though - and a subject I'm going to raise on Lust Bites next month - you CAN'T have a HEA, just a Happy Right Now. The sword of Damocles is always there..

[1] Austenese is popular right now. I just looked at Point of Honour (slightly alternate Regency history series published by Tor) which is Austenese from line one, where the heroine's lot as a Fallen Women is commented on with a play on the opening of Price and Prejudice. Possibly this is a style Tor editors like (for your reference in querying projects).

[2] I saw Spamalot in NYC shortly after it opened in 2005. I talked about it here (http://ter369.livejournal.com/259382.html). If you only hear the soundtrack, there are laughs aplenty with the parody of musical comedy conventions. Sara Ramirez stopped the show repeatedly and won a Tony Award for that reason.

There are certain things expected of a third son. That one will not put oneself forward, that one will join the army, or the church, or the bar. That one will not kill one's elder brothers and that one will, if at all possible in the circumstances of being a third son, marry well.

Shame he's gay!

Well that's the first bit, so I hope i can keep the pressure up through out. Thank you so much - I'll look into Tor if I get it finished. Hope they like gay regency...

And thanks! I'll go and read your post.

xxx

Tor (http://www.tor.com/) is the SciFi/Fantasy imprint that published the Kushiel books by Jacqueline Carey, speaking of not-strictly-heterosexual alternate history. Forge is their mainstream line, covering a range of genres.

[livejournal.com profile] alg is an editor at Tor. She blogs about publishing in general and posts updates on who at Tor is seeking what kind of submissions.

Spamalot is BRILLIANT! My daughter took me to see it on Broadway over a year ago and the moment it opened in London I took my other daughter to see it in the West End. It's fantastic. If you go, try to get the seat D1. But don't tell them I told you to.

Hee! I sat in B1 in NYC. My face hurt from laughing by the time we sang "Always look on the bright side of life".
