is this the return of The Knights Who Say Ni????

No!  This is the movie - "Pathfinder" - Ridley Scott does Monty Python!

Vikings arrive in America.  Wearing Monty Python helmets.  And riding... HORSES.

so much wrong.

This is the original.

I dread R W Day's reaction. She's the Viking historian. I fear for her blood vessels....

Did you see that the cast/crew of Spamalot created a world record in Trafalgar Square yesterday, with the biggest coconut-shell horse-clip-clopping 'orchestra'?

I saw the trailer when I went to 300 - here is what I said about it in my LJ then.

Trailer. For some film whose name I have mercifully forgotten. The premise is that in the peaceful days of pre-Columbian North America, a peaceful, peaceful tribe of happy Amerinds is wantonly attacked by evil Vikings. And the Vikings are all like ten feet tall and wear...wait for it...wait for it...HORNED HELMETS. And not traditional 'What's Opera, Doc' horned helmets. These horns are huge and twisted like a ram's.

I swear to you, when these massive Vikings, all wrapped up in shaggy fur with incredibly huge horned helmets came looming out of the forest, they looked like the Knights Who Say Ni. I guess they'd be the Knights Who Say Børk! Børk! Børk!

*headdesk*

Horrid. I hear it's from a graphic novel, so like 300, there will be inaccuracies. They didn't bother me in 300 because I know next to nothing about Greeks. They'll bother me in this one, so I think I'll give it a miss.

It's a shame they didn't just film Harry Harrison's A Technicolor Time Machine instead. It would have been much funnier, and no-one would have expected any form of historical accuracy whatsoever.

I am only just getting into comics, but why do historical comics get the "dont have to be accurate because i'm a comic" card?

Date: 2007-04-27 03:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sinick.livejournal.com
It's all in the word. "Dude, What Part Of COMIC Don't You Get?"

...unless of course they want gongs/wider sales out of the comic ghetto/to be taken seriously, in which case the cry suddenly switches to: "Don't call it a COMIC, COMICS are for kiddies. THIS is a GRAPHIC NOVEL."

People.

Can't live with 'em, can't AK the buggers.

...the Vikings did have horses, though. Horses they even had with them while sailing - unless the Icelandic horses were dropped there by UFOs.

I'm not denying that they had horses - I'm just thinking how unlikely it was that 1. they took them to America and 2. took them all away with them - I'm not sure without checking but I thought the evidence showed that no horses were seen on the american continent until Cortez.

Well, the guys didn't know where exactly they were going... But, granted, it doesn't sound very likely that the first group sailing off to investigate possible places to stay would take their horses along - too cumbersome to look after on a voyage of unknown length and duration! Those would probably be brought a little later, with the bigger fleets, if the place proved suitable for a proper farmstead etc.

They Came By Night, starring Tom Hanks as a renegade alien captain who travels back in time to bring the horse to Iceland. :D

...wait. Is there such a film?? *goes looking* Ehhh.

I stand corrected. But, well, I guess this just shows that there's absolutely nothing that I'd consider too ludicrous to have been produced by Hollywood.

*grin*

It's very sad, really. The original manuscript is based on an old legend from the Norwegian sami/lapp population. The original movie from 80-something is a Norwegian classic (no Vikings there, just a band of very bad and dirty men). It used to be a very sweet story before the added Hollywood violence and the meaningless plot twists.

And yes, the Vikings definitely had horses. Lots of them! The great Viking god Odin even had one with eight legs! :)

I've given up expecting historical accuracy from Hollywood. By the time they've finished convincing us that the US won the second world war single-handedly, and that 1970s aircraft carriers appeared magically at Pearl Harbour, and that the Scots were brave and peaceful people who fought against the Evil Oppressor English, and... shall I go on? :)
